An aging silent film star refuses to accept that her career has ended — Billy Wilder's 1950 classic, and one of the great studies in not going quietly. The artwork holds the same beautiful refusal: a figure, drapery, ironwork, painterly and half-dissolving in violet and moss and old gold, as though the image were fading while you looked directly at it. The blur only deepens as the cloth falls.
